Brief History of Filoli
Before you explore the wonders of Filoli, it’s essential to understand its rich history. The estate’s story dates back to 1915, when William Bowers Bourn II, a prominent San Francisco businessman, and his wife, Agnes Moody, purchased the land. Their vision? To create a country estate that rivaled the grandeur of European estates. As a result, you’ll quickly realize that they achieved that goal.

What is Filoli?
“Filoli” derives from the phrase “Fight, Love, Live,” symbolizing the Bourn family’s motto. In more detail, the motto is Fight for a Just Cause, Love Your Fellow Man, and Live a Good Life. Construction of the estate began in 1915 and continued until 1917, when the magnificent Georgian Revival mansion was completed. The Bourns spared no expense in designing their dream home, enlisting the expertise of renowned architects and landscape designers of the time.

This allowed visitors worldwide to marvel at its splendor and immerse themselves in its rich history. Today, the 654-acre property is a California Historic Landmark on the National Register of Historic Places. The main property of the Georgian revival-style mansion and English Renaissance gardens covers 16 acres.
